Spur Gears for Parallel-Shaft Drives
Asar Engineering is a spur gear manufacturer in India, with its manufacturing unit at Gandevi, Gujarat. We cut spur gears in-house, from small pinions to heavy-module gears, to the customer's drawing or sample. A spur gear is a cylindrical gear with straight teeth parallel to the axis of rotation. It transmits power between parallel shafts and changes speed and torque. The simple tooth geometry makes spur gears easy to make, install, inspect and maintain.
Unlike helical gears, spur gears have no tooth angle. Each tooth engages across its full face width at once. This gives efficient power transmission at moderate speeds, but also more impact, vibration and noise as speed increases.
We make each spur gear to suit the shaft arrangement, ratio, torque, speed, tooth size, material, heat treatment, lubrication and mounting of the machine.
A typical spur gear pair has a smaller pinion, which usually drives, and a larger wheel, which is driven. When the pinion drives the wheel, speed falls and torque rises. When a larger gear drives a smaller one, speed rises and torque falls.
When choosing a spur gear manufacturer in India, check the tooth-cutting capacity (module and diameter), material and hardening, inspection methods, and whether the supplier can match the gear to your machine or copy it from a worn sample. Spur gears are widely used in industrial machinery, material handling systems, mill drives and other low- to moderate-speed drives.
What is a Spur Gear?
A spur gear is a cylindrical gear with straight teeth cut parallel to its axis of rotation. It transmits rotation and power between parallel shafts.
It is one of the most basic gear designs because of its simple geometry. Helical gears, with their inclined teeth, produce axial thrust. Spur gears, with straight teeth, do not.
Spur gears are usually used in pairs. The smaller, driving gear is the pinion and the larger, driven gear is the wheel. The speed and torque ratio depends on the number of teeth on each gear.
For example, when a small pinion drives a larger wheel:
- Output rotational speed decreases.
- Output torque increases in proportion to the gear ratio, less small friction losses.
- The two external gears rotate in opposite directions.
Because two meshing external spur gears turn in opposite directions, an idler gear is added between them when both shafts must turn the same way.
The performance of a spur gear depends on these factors:
- Tooth Geometry: Tooth shape, dimensions and involute profile decide how the gears mesh and carry load.
- Module: The module is the pitch diameter divided by the number of teeth; it sets the tooth size.
- Pressure Angle: The pressure angle sets the direction of force between mating teeth. 20 degrees is standard.
- Number of Teeth: Tooth count, with the module, sets the gear diameter and the ratio.
- Gear Ratio: The ratio of teeth on the driven and driving gears sets the speed and torque relationship.
- Face Width: The width of the teeth sets the contact area and load capacity.
- Material: Selected according to load, wear, speed and environment.
- Heat Treatment: Hardening improves hardness, wear resistance and fatigue life where required.
- Manufacturing Accuracy: Tooth accuracy affects backlash, contact, noise, vibration and performance.
- Lubrication: Correct lubrication reduces friction and wear and extends the life of the gear pair.
- Operating Speed: Spur gears work best at low to moderate speeds, within the limits of their tooth accuracy and material.
- Transmitted Torque: Gear size and material must suit the required torque.
For industrial use, select the gear on actual load, speed, duty cycle, environment and service life, not on nominal gear dimensions alone.
Correct centre distance and backlash are important. Too little backlash causes heating and noise; too much causes knocking under reversing loads. Where the centre distance cannot be changed, a profile shift (addendum modification) can be used to fit the gears to it.
Applications of Spur Gears
Simple design, high efficiency and easy manufacture make spur gears a key part of many machines. They are most effective on parallel shafts at speeds where noise and vibration are not a problem.
Common applications include:
- Conveyor Systems: Industrial conveyors use spur gears in low- and moderate-speed drives between parallel shafts.
- Hoists and Cranes: Hoisting equipment uses spur gears to reduce speed and increase torque.
- Crushers and Mills: Crushers, ball mills and other heavy machinery use heavy-module spur gears and pinions in their drives.
- Cement, Sugar and Steel Plants: Mill drives, cane mill gearing, kiln auxiliaries and roller tables use large spur gears and pinions.
- Marine and Port Winches: Winches use spur gears to transmit power and provide torque for lifting and pulling.
- Material Handling Machinery: Lifting and handling equipment uses spur gears for simple speed reduction and torque increase.
- Packaging Machinery: Packaging equipment running at moderate speeds uses spur gears for controlled motion between parallel shafts.
- Machine Tools and Special Machines: Machine builders use spur gears for compact, simple speed and torque conversion.
- General Mechanical Equipment: Spur gears suit any drive with parallel shafts where the lower noise of helical gears is not needed.
The right application depends on speed, torque, gear size, lubrication, load, required service life and acceptable noise and vibration.
Common Types of Spur Gears
Spur gears come in different arrangements depending on where the teeth are cut and how the motion must be transmitted.
External Spur Gears
External spur gears are the most common type, with straight teeth cut on the outside of a cylindrical blank.
Two meshing external spur gears rotate in opposite directions. The ratio is set by their tooth counts.
Internal Spur Gears
Internal spur gears have teeth cut on the inside of a ring. A smaller external pinion runs inside the internal gear. Asar Engineering shapes internal gear teeth in-house.
Unlike two external gears, an internal gear and its pinion rotate in the same direction.
Internal gears give compact drives and are used as ring gears in planetary gear sets and in other special mechanisms.
Rack and Pinion
A rack and pinion consists of a round spur gear, the pinion, and a straight toothed bar, the rack. We cut racks in-house on CNC machines.
Instead of transmitting rotation between two shafts, it converts:
- Rotary motion into linear motion, or
- Linear motion into rotary motion.
This makes rack and pinion drives useful wherever controlled straight-line movement is needed, such as gates, sliding tables and lifting platforms.
Pinion and Wheel
A standard spur gear drive uses a smaller pinion driving a larger wheel. This reduces speed and increases output torque.
The reverse arrangement, where a larger gear drives a smaller one, increases speed and reduces output torque.
Idler Gear Arrangement
An idler gear sits between the driving and driven gears. It reverses the direction of rotation of the output but does not change the overall speed ratio.
It is used when input and output shafts must turn the same way, or to bridge a larger centre distance.
Core Components of a Spur Gear Drive
A spur gear drive consists of several elements that work together to transmit power between parallel shafts.
Gear Teeth
The straight teeth carry the load. Their profile, size, spacing and accuracy directly affect meshing and load transmission.
Gear Body
The gear body supports the teeth and connects them to the shaft through the bore, keyway or spline. It must be strong enough for the transmitted loads.
Pinion
The pinion is normally the smaller gear of the pair and usually the driver. It passes power to the larger wheel.
Wheel
The wheel is the larger, driven gear in a reduction drive. It takes the force from the pinion and delivers the required output speed and torque.
Shaft
The shaft supports the gear and transmits rotation to the connected machinery. It must be sized for torsional and bending stresses.
Bearings
Bearings support the shafts and keep the gears aligned. Because spur gears produce no axial thrust from the teeth, the bearing arrangement can be simpler than for helical gears.
Gear Housing
The housing encloses the gears and holds them in position. It protects the gears from contamination and holds the lubricant.
Lubrication System
Lubrication reduces friction and wear between mating teeth. It also carries away heat and protects the tooth surfaces.
Seals
Seals keep the lubricant inside enclosed gear drives and keep dust, moisture and other contaminants out.
Couplings
Couplings connect the gear drive to motors, shafts or driven equipment. Depending on the design, they can take up some shaft misalignment.
Mounting Arrangement
Correct mounting keeps the right centre distance and tooth alignment. Poor installation causes wear, noise, vibration and uneven tooth loading.
Before fitting, check that the shafts are parallel and the gears are aligned across the full face width. Misalignment concentrates the load on one end of the teeth and is a common cause of early pitting and tooth breakage.
Spur Gear Supplier in India
Asar Engineering is a spur gear supplier in India to industrial machinery builders, material handling, cement, sugar, steel and mining plants, and general engineering users. We supply new gears, replacement gears and heavy-module spur gears made to drawing.
A good supplier looks at actual operating conditions, not just nominal dimensions. Load, speed, torque, ratio, duty cycle, centre distance, material, lubrication and environment all affect the right spur gear design.
We check each requirement against the machine and its operating conditions before recommending material, hardening and tooth accuracy.
When evaluating a spur gear supplier, consider:
- Manufacturing and engineering capabilities
- Gear tooth machining accuracy
- Tooth profile consistency
- Material selection
- Heat-treatment practices
- Dimensional accuracy
- Gear ratio requirements
- Load and torque capacity
- Operating speed
- Center-distance requirements
- Lubrication arrangements
- Quality inspection procedures
- Customization capabilities
- Technical assistance
- Delivery coordination
Spur gears suit drives where efficiency, simple construction and no axial thrust matter. For high-speed machinery, check speed and noise limits before choosing them.
For large, slow-running drives such as mill and crusher gears, heavy-module spur gears are often preferred over helical gears. They are simpler to make and align, produce no axial thrust, and their teeth can be induction hardened for longer wear life.
If you need a replacement and have no drawing, send the worn gear or the pair. We measure the tooth count, module, pressure angle, face width and bore details from the sample, allow for wear, and make the new gear to match the mating gear.
Benefits of Spur Gears
- Simple Construction: Straight teeth on a cylindrical body make the design easy to understand, manufacture, inspect and maintain.
- High Efficiency: Spur gears transmit power very efficiently, typically around 98–99% per stage, because the tooth contact involves little sliding.
- No Axial Thrust: With teeth parallel to the axis, spur gears produce no axial tooth force.
- Simpler Bearing Arrangement: Without axial thrust, bearing selection and gearbox construction are simpler.
- Cost-Effective: Simple geometry makes spur gears economical to produce compared with helical or bevel gears.
- Reliable Power Transmission: Designed and run within their limits, spur gears give consistent power transmission.
- Exact Speed Ratio: The tooth counts of the gears give a fixed, predictable speed and torque ratio.
- Compact Drives: Spur gears suit compact drives between parallel shafts.
- Easy Maintenance: Simple construction makes inspection, lubrication and replacement straightforward.
- Versatile Arrangements: External gears, internal gears, rack and pinion and idler arrangements adapt spur gearing to different machines.
- Suited to Low and Moderate Speeds: Spur gears perform well where speeds stay within their design limits and noise is not critical.
- Torque Multiplication: A small pinion driving a larger wheel reduces speed and increases output torque.

Spur Gear FAQs
Questions buyers usually ask us before sending an enquiry for spur gear.
When should I use a spur gear instead of a helical gear?
A spur gear suits parallel shafts at low to moderate speed where some running noise is acceptable. It produces no axial thrust, so the bearings stay simple, and it is economical to make. For large, slow drives such as mill and crusher gearing, heavy-module spur gears are often preferred. For fast, quiet drives, a helical gear is usually better.
How important are backlash and alignment on a spur gear pair?
Very. Too little backlash makes the pair run hot and noisy; too much causes knocking when the load reverses. The shafts must also be parallel so the spur gear teeth bear across the full face width. Misalignment loads one end of the teeth and often leads to early pitting or breakage. Where centre distance is fixed, a profile shift can help.
What details do you need for a spur gear quotation?
We need the drawing or sample, number of teeth, module, pressure angle (20 or 14.5 degrees), face width, and bore, keyway and hub details. Please add the mating gear's tooth count or centre distance, the material and hardening if known, the machine and the quantity. For large wheels, mention whether cast steel is acceptable.
Can you make a new spur gear to mesh with an existing worn mating gear?
Yes. Send the worn spur gear, or both gears. We measure tooth count, module, pressure angle, face width and bore, allow for the wear on the teeth, and cut the new gear in-house so that it runs with the gear you are keeping. Teeth can be induction hardened at our unit where longer wear life is needed.
Can you supply heavy-module spur gears and pinions across India and for export?
Yes. We cut spur gears from small pinions up to heavy-module gears, along with internal gears and racks, at our unit in Gandevi, Gujarat. We deliver across India and take export orders under our IEC registration, in single pieces or batches. Every gear has its dimensions and runout checked with dial gauges before dispatch.
