Gears Cut In-House to Your Drawing

Asar Engineering is an industrial transmission gear manufacturer in India, with its manufacturing unit at Gandevi, Gujarat. Since 2015, we have been cutting spur, helical, bevel, worm and internal gear teeth in-house, making each part to the customer's drawing or sample.

Transmission gears differ in design, working principle, material, size and weight. They carry anything from a few watts in small drives to hundreds of kilowatts in heavy machinery, and they also differ in tooth form, shaft arrangement and number of reduction stages. Depending on the machine, a designer can choose spur, helical, bevel, worm or planetary gears, or a complete gearbox built around them.

In industrial machines that run at high torque and power, the gear drive must be accurate and strong enough to carry the load at the required efficiency. The choice depends on shaft arrangement, speed, load, lubrication, operating temperature, gear ratio and mounting conditions.

As an industrial transmission gear manufacturer in India, Asar Engineering makes each gear for its intended duty: material, heat treatment and tooth accuracy are matched to the load and speed. Our gears go into machine building, process plants, power plants, material handling and general manufacturing.

When choosing a gear manufacturer, check whether the teeth are cut in-house, how they are hardened and inspected, and whether the supplier can work from your drawing or from a worn sample.

Technical support matters too. A manufacturer who asks about your load, speed and duty cycle is more likely to supply a gear that lasts.

What is Industrial Transmission Gear?

An industrial transmission gear is a toothed wheel that transmits power from one shaft to another. Torque and rotation pass from the driving shaft to the driven shaft, with the teeth of one gear meshing into the spaces between the teeth of the other.

Depending on the ratio, a gear pair can increase torque at the expense of speed, or increase speed at the expense of torque. This is why gears are found in almost every industrial machine.

Common forms include spur and helical gears for parallel shafts, bevel gears for intersecting shafts, and worm gears for non-intersecting shafts at right angles, where a high reduction ratio is needed in a single stage.

An industrial gearbox can contain several gear stages to give the ratio the machine needs. The housing holds the gears, shafts and bearings in one compact, sealed unit.

A gearbox also includes bearings, seals, shaft mountings and a lubrication system. Several factors must be considered when designing industrial gears.

These include:

  • Gear geometry and tooth profile
  • Material and heat treatment
  • Manufacturing accuracy
  • Gear ratio
  • Input and output speed
  • Transmitted power
  • Output torque
  • Shaft arrangement
  • Lubrication method
  • Operating temperature
  • Load characteristics
  • Mounting arrangement

For heavy-duty applications, gears must be designed to withstand continuous loads and shock. Correct design, material and manufacturing are essential for a long service life.

Applications of Industrial Transmission Gear

Industrial transmission gears are used across many industries because they transmit mechanical power in a controlled, efficient way. The gear arrangement is selected according to the required speed, torque, direction and operating environment.

Common applications include:

  • Cement Industry: Gear systems are used in crushers, conveyors, mills, kilns and other heavy-duty machinery.
  • Steel Plants: Industrial gears are used in rolling mills, conveyors, material handling equipment and production machinery.
  • Power Plants: Gears are used in coal handling, ash handling, cooling tower drives and auxiliary machinery.
  • Mining Industry: Heavy-duty gear drives run crushers, conveyors, bucket elevators and mineral-processing machinery.
  • Material Handling: Gears are used in cranes, hoists, conveyors, elevators and lifting systems.
  • Chemical Industry: Gear drives are used in mixers, agitators, pumps, compressors and processing equipment.
  • Paper Industry: Gear systems drive rollers, dryers, conveyors, cutters and paper-processing machinery.
  • Sugar Industry: Transmission gears are used in cane mills, conveyors, crushers and processing equipment.
  • Food Processing: Gear drives are used in mixers, conveyors, packaging equipment and processing machinery.
  • Marine and Port Equipment: Gears are used in winches, capstans, pumps and auxiliary machinery.
  • Oil and Gas: Gear drives are used in pumps, compressors, material handling systems and processing equipment.
  • General Manufacturing: Machine tools, production lines, conveyors and special-purpose machines all use industrial gear drives.

The right gear arrangement depends on the application. High-speed drives need higher tooth accuracy and suitable lubrication, while heavy-load drives need larger modules, hardened teeth and a rigid housing.

Common Types of Industrial Gears and Gearboxes

There are several types of industrial gears, each suited to a particular shaft arrangement and duty.

Spur Gears

Spur gears have straight teeth cut parallel to the gear axis. They are simple to make, produce no axial thrust and are used on parallel shafts.

Helical Gears

Helical gears have teeth cut at an angle to the gear axis. The teeth engage gradually, so they run quieter and smoother than spur gears and carry more load for the same size. They do produce axial thrust, which the bearings must take. Helical gears are widely used in industrial gearboxes for continuous duty.

Bevel Gears

Bevel gears transmit power between intersecting shafts, usually at 90 degrees. They are made with straight or spiral teeth and are used where the drive must change direction.

Worm Gears

A worm drive consists of a worm and a worm wheel on non-intersecting shafts at right angles. It gives a high speed reduction in a single stage and is used in compact right-angle drives.

Planetary Gears

A planetary gear set consists of a sun gear, planet gears and an internally toothed ring gear. It is compact and carries high torque for its size, so it suits drives that need high power density.

Industrial Gearboxes

An industrial gearbox combines gears, shafts, bearings, seals, lubrication and housing into one transmission unit. Common configurations are parallel-shaft helical, right-angle bevel-helical, worm and planetary.

A gearbox should be selected after considering power, speed, torque, reduction ratio, duty cycle, mounting position, environment and maintenance needs.

Core Components of an Industrial Gear Drive

An industrial gear drive is made up of several components that work together to transmit mechanical power.

Gears

Gears are the primary power-transmitting elements. Their tooth geometry, material, surface finish, and manufacturing accuracy influence the performance of the complete transmission system.

Shafts

Shafts transfer rotational movement between gears and connected machinery. They must be appropriately sized to withstand torsional and bending stresses.

Bearings

Bearings support rotating shafts and help maintain accurate shaft alignment while reducing friction. Proper bearing selection is important for continuous industrial operation.

Gear Housing

The housing encloses and supports the internal components. Industrial housings are made from cast iron or fabricated mild steel, depending on the application and design.

Lubrication System

Lubrication reduces friction, limits wear, removes heat, and helps protect gear teeth and bearings. Depending on operating speed and configuration, lubrication may involve splash lubrication, an oil bath, or forced oil circulation.

Seals

Seals help retain lubricant inside the gearbox while preventing contaminants from entering the internal assembly. Appropriate sealing is particularly important in dusty, wet, or demanding industrial environments.

Couplings

Couplings connect the gearbox with motors, driven equipment, or other shafts. They can accommodate certain levels of shaft misalignment and help transfer rotational power.

Gearbox Accessories

Depending on the application, an industrial gearbox may also incorporate inspection covers, cooling arrangements, oil pumps, filters, temperature sensors, breathers, torque arms, and monitoring systems.

FAQ

Industrial Transmission Gear FAQs

Questions buyers usually ask us before sending an enquiry for industrial transmission gear.

Which type of industrial transmission gear suits my shaft layout?

It depends mainly on how the shafts sit. Spur and helical gears run on parallel shafts, with helical preferred for quieter continuous duty. Bevel gears, straight or spiral, connect intersecting shafts, usually at 90 degrees. Worm and worm-wheel sets give a large reduction in one stage on crossed right-angle shafts. We help you choose once we know the load, speed and ratio.

How do you decide the material and hardening of an industrial transmission gear?

We look at transmitted power, speed, duty cycle and shock loading before fixing the steel grade and hardness. Where the teeth need more wear resistance, we induction harden them at our own facility in Gandevi. Hobbed or shaped teeth are typically cut to ISO/DIN grade 8 to 10; drives with higher pitch-line speeds need ground teeth and forced lubrication.

What should I send to get a quote for an industrial transmission gear?

Send a drawing if you have one, or the worn gear itself. Tell us the gear type, module, number of teeth, face width, bore and keyway, material and hardness if known, and the standard to follow (ISO, DIN, AGMA or ANSI). Add the machine, motor power, speed and quantity so that we can check the design against the duty.

Can you copy a worn gear when the original maker has no drawing?

Yes. We measure the worn gear, and ideally its mating gear, to establish tooth count, module, tooth form and bore details, then cut the replacement in-house by hobbing or shaping. We make one-off replacements as well as batches. Dimensions and runout are checked with dial gauges before the industrial transmission gear leaves our works.

Do you supply industrial transmission gears outside Gujarat and overseas?

Yes. Our manufacturing unit is at Gandevi, Gujarat, we have a branch office in Mumbai, and we supply customers across India. As an IEC-registered company we also take export orders, made to the buyer's drawing and chosen standard, with attention to packing and documentation. Orders range from a single gear to batch quantities.
